How did you find your internship?
I found my internship through a family friend. He is a lawyer so I asked him if he had any colleagues who are lawyers that needed help for the summer, and he had one.
Why this internship?
I wanted this internship since it was in the law field and I wanted to gain some experience in the field to help decide if I wanted to ultimately attend law school. Also, being located in New York, I had an easy drive to work everyday and lived at home.
What were your general responsibilities?
Since it was a real estate law firm, I had to organize the closing documents for the attorney I worked with at the firm. There was no legal research or writing, which is unique for a law firm, but in the real estate field (or at least this firm) this is not necessary.
What was a typical day like?
Each day, I pretty much did the same thing. I went through all of the past closing that the attorney did and looked for the necessary documents that were needed to complete the closing binder. This binder, once complete, got sent off to their respective banks.
Did you receive any perks, benefits, or compensation?
I was paid for my time there. Since it was not an everyday job (3-4 days per week) and there were not set hours, I was paid hourly.
Where did you live?
I lived at home while I had this internship. It was about a 45-minute drive to work each day.
Future plans?
I plan on taking some time off after I graduate before ultimately attending law school. I may try to work at a law firm, or possible travel.
Any particular advice?
Really try to use your internships to see whether you may want to pursue a job in that field, or never again work in the field. Even if you have a horrible experience during an internship, then use this as a positive in the sense that you can eliminate it from a possible career choice.
