Atlantic Records - David
How did you find your internship?
A friend of mine had the same internship the summer before. He contacted his former boss and I sent her my resume.
Why this internship?
It was the only internship I knew how to get. I had no other internships lined up and if I didn't get this one, I probably would not have had an internship at all.
What were your general responsibilities? Answering Phones, Making Copies, Setting Up Meetings, Booking Travel, Researching Bands, etc
What was a typical day like?
I would get into the office around 11am. Sat at my desk and tried to find new bands on MySpace and other music blog sites. While there, I answered phones and aided the entire department with whatever it needed. I would usually leave the office around 7pm and then head out to a concert every night to check out an up and coming band.
Did you receive any perks, benefits, or compensation?
The internship was unpaid, but I received free lunch most days. I was reimbursed for any concerts that I went to and I was able to be guest listed to most company/industry events.
Where did you live?
I lived in the NYU Dorms. They made it really easy for students doing internships to rent a dorm room by the week.
Future plans?
I plan on having a full time job in the music industry while managing some bands on the side.
Any particular advice?
Personal references are always a great way in. However, when you don't have that, I would use the internet to browse through opportunities and find employers looking for interns.
