Coming to work in the United States is one of the most exciting cultural experiences. The US has an endless amount of opportunities and is a great place to Intern for some of the leading companies in the world.

The steps to intern in the United States are somewhat complicated, but highly attainable. If you have a dream to spend time gaining exciting cultural and work experience than use these tips and resources to make it happen.

Some advice…

Companies are always interested to diversify their workforce. Use your cultural background as an advantage when you contact and interview with a company. Remember you bring a different perspective to the office than most students and many employers would be happy to go through the paper work to help you along.

Do your homework…

The easier you make it for an employer, the more likely they will be willing and motivated to help you. So do your homework on what it takes on their end, so you can walk them through the process. Employers often times know as little as you do about the visas and sponsorship necessary to come intern in the US.

Plan ahead…

The process often takes time. So don’t contact employers right before you want to start working. Plan ahead, do your homework, and see the process through and you will have no problem.

You are not the first to do this, so ask around in your home country as well. Your university most likely has resources and contacts in the US to help you through this process.

Do your friends or family know anyone who works in the US? Do you know anyone who has interned in the US before? All of these people can be highly beneficial in walking you through the process and helping you get the job you want.

Also, unfortunately business is done almost exclusively in English, though knowing multiple languages is always a business plus, it is important that you display strong skills in English communication and writing.
